FGC LAGOS “ERA RACE” 2018 The annual ‘Era race’ is a sporting event designed by FGC Lagos, Ijanikin, to groom students in sporting activities especially in the area of Marathon race. The event dates back to about 40 years ago since the establishment of the school.  It is the first stage of sporting activity that leads to the Annual Inter-House Sports Event. The participants comprise of all students ranging from junior secondary to senior secondary, male and female. In addition, all Staff are on ground to coordinate the activity and ensure the well-being of the students. Being an outdoor activity, security and first aid measures are also put in place to ensure the safety and health of the contestants. The sole activity of the contestant is to cover the distance from the school field, through the school main gate, across the main road towards Iyan Era, get to the Oba’s Palace at Abule, which is the midpoint of the race and back to the school field. At this mid-point (Oba’s Palace), the contestant will be given a tag, which he/she must present on the way back to the school field. Failure to present a tag will lead to automatic disqualification from the event. The contest begins as early as 6.00 a.m at dawn to avoid heat exhaustion as the sun comes up. The girls are expected to begin 15 mins earlier than the boys to even the ground for fair play. At the end of the competition, the first male and female junior contestants to reach the school field after covering the stipulated distance are awarded the titles “Era Prince and Era Princess” respectively and for the senior category, “Era King and Era Queen” respectively. In addition, they will be awarded points for their individual Sport houses, which are added to the overall points at the Inter House Sports Games. The event is a much-awaited one as it show cases the spirit of sportsmanship and comradeship. No one is left behind as contestants team up to help each other finish the race. Staff are stationed at strategic positions to coordinate as well as encourage the students to victory. This year’s Era Race was no less exciting, as students and staff came out to make the event a memorable one for the school.
